FX ART TRAINEE

What You'll Do

Create FX for Fortnite, including cosmetic FX such as backpack and pickaxe FX, gameplay FX, such as weapon and ability FX, and map FX for Battle Royale maps - wind, rain, birds and so on, making sure FX look great across all platforms from mobile to high end PC.

In this role, you will

  • Work on cosmetics, contrails and effects that often depend on animation and modeling
  • Use Unreal Material Editor, Blueprint, Niagara, Sequencer and other tools to bring Battle Royale to life with stunning FX
  • Execute on a range of visual effects styles from realistic to stylized
  • Contribute in creative ways to the final look of Fortnite outfits, cosmetics, maps and gameplay features
  • You will work directly with the best in industry FX and tech artists
  • Work with Niagara and help shape the future FX tools in Unreal Engine
  • Focus on creating and implementing all visual effects tied to gameplay and cosmetics — including pickaxes, pickaxes-swing and impact effects, gliders, character effects, and emotes. The work often evolves with each season and may extend into gameplay effects after experimentation (gun effects, consumable effects). It’s a highly dynamic role with plenty of creative freedom; no two tasks are ever the same, and designers regularly take on a variety of unique challenges month to month

What we're looking for

  • Candidates are required to provide a portfolio of FX projects
  • Ability to make good quality FX using Unreal Engine in Niagara
  • Competency in UE Material Editor and Blueprint
  • Knowledge of DCC package (Maya, Max, Houdini, or Blender)
  • A good sense of timing, shape language and color use
  • Passion for game development and Epic Games products
  • Perseverance when facing frustration, someone who understands that it's expected to not get the assignment right in the first attempts, but keep trying. Also, that receives feedback well, adjusts and adapts. No space for ego
  • Strong communicator. Quick and effective when reaching out to the team to solve problems, knows when a task is tricky enough to reach for senior teammates. Also ability to effectively sync information with multiple teams and manage to keep attention to multiple aspects at same time 

This trainee program has a flexible start date in 2026. Recruitment will be ongoing until teams find an ideal match.
