About the Role 

The Athletic is seeking an energetic, motivated senior reporter to cover one of its premier beats, the Chicago Bulls. This individual must maintain a keen sense of news awareness, cultivating strong sources to break or advance news, as well as a nose for a great story. 

This position is based in Chicago. 

Responsibilities
  • Exceptional news acumen coupled with robust sources to drive news coverage, as well as a proven track record of developing new sources. 
  • A sharp, analytical mind capable of analyzing situations and providing insightful perspective.
  • Meticulous attention to detail when sourcing stories. 
  • Ability to craft rich, ambitious features through in-depth reporting and access that delves beyond superficial storylines. 
  • Capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously, balancing long-term initiatives with timely story delivery. 
  • Proficiency in writing concise news stories and providing analysis for various platforms, including live journalism. 
  • Creative approach to story ideation and formats. 
  • Unique voice that sets this reporter apart from competitors. 
  • Able to collaborate effectively with colleagues and share information. 
  • Dedication to engaging with the audience, as appropriate. 
  • Interest in internal metrics that inform content strategy and subscriber preferences. 

  • Requirements
  • Minimum 6+ years of relevant experience at a media organization. 
  • In-depth knowledge of professional basketball. 
  • Thorough understanding of the journalistic process. 
  • Interest in other journalistic platforms, including podcasting, a plus. 
  • This position is based in Chicago. 

  • The annual base salary range for this role is $90,000.00 - $100,000.00 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location. It may also include non-cash rewards and benefits. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
