Job Description

This opportunity is open exclusively to undergraduate students from Wadham and St John’s Colleges at the University of Oxford. Applicants must be available from 6 July to 28 August, with applications due by Sunday, 18 January.

For 30 years we’ve been independently developing and publishing incredible video games at our multiple studios founded by Jason & Chris Kingsley, but Rebellion is more than just games. We have our own film studio, we create board games, publish books, and through 2000AD, publish comics and graphic novels such as the amazing Judge Dredd.

As a Programming Intern, you’ll collaborate with experienced professionals, build practical skills, and contribute to real projects at our creative and relaxed headquarters along the Oxford riverside.

We are actively recruiting for a diverse team and continue to add to our culture of growth and inclusion. Rebellion encourages innovation in all areas, and we look forward to hearing how you can help us to be better. We encourage all demographics of culture, gender, ethnicity, neurodiversity and beyond, because a representative team makes better products.

What you’ll do & learn

  • How professional engineering teams ship features using production workflows and agile practices.
  • Best practices for version control, code reviews, continuous integration, and documenting work.
  • Communicating status, estimating tasks, and translating playtest/design feedback into technical changes.
  • Fundamentals of performance profiling, systematic debugging, and writing maintainable code.

From the Gameplay Teams:

  • Designing gameplay systems and writing efficient C/C++ OOP code in-engine.
  • Preventing regressions with testing habits and meeting studio coding standards.
  • Prioritising bugs/features and collaborating with Design and QA.

From the Build & Automation Teams:

  • CI/CD concepts, automated testing, and build orchestration.
  • Using Python to create tooling and improve content pipelines.
  • Monitoring, metrics, and reliability practices that improve developer workflows.

Requirements

  • Internships are exclusively accessible to undergraduate students from Wadham and St John's Colleges at Oxford University.
  • Available for attendance from 6 July – 28 August.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for the gaming industry coupled with a strong interest in understanding the game development process.
  • Foundation in core CS from your degree: problem-solving, debugging, and object-oriented programming.
  • Familiarity with C/C++, and/or Python - used in modules, labs, or side projects.
  • Right to work in the UK for the duration of the internship.
  • All applications must be submitted by Sunday, 18 January.
